IBS Product Buyer’s Guide (updated May 2024)

How To Find A High Quality IBS Product

With each latest health supplement trend to overcome IBS suffering, manufacturers very quickly begin to create products that they claim are the best on the market or the most effective.

These wild claims are often not backed up with scientific support and with no real explanations as to why they have formulated their version of an IBS supplement in the way that they have or how exactly they work to help to address the uncomfortable symptoms of IBS! To say the least, they are very vague.

It can be beyond confusing for consumers, not knowing which products are worth buying and which are worthless fakes. We felt it was time to carefully examine some of the IBS products available, to discover more about which ones may be telling the truth and those that clearly you need to stay away from.

More importantly, which are the real, scientifically proven ingredients you must look for in an IBS supplement?

What Does The Science Say?

Digestive Enzymes [1]

Enzymes exist naturally in your digestive tract to help successfully break down carbs, fats and proteins. Papayas contain papain which is a type of protease – an enzyme that breaks down proteins. In a 2013 study people found that their constipation and bloating symptoms significantly improved after taking papaya for 40 days.

Aloe Vera [2]

Aloe Vera contains natural laxatives which can aid constipation. A 2013 study examined 33 people suffering from IBS symptoms over an 8 week period for treatment with Aloe Vera. Findings included the Aloe Vera can help reduce painful IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, flatulence and constipation.

Peppermint [3]

A cooling herb which contains several essential oils, peppermint has many health benefits. A 2014 review looked at nine different studies with a total of 926 people with IBS who were studied for at least 2 weeks. Those who took peppermint oil saw a significant improvement more than those who took a placebo, in their IBS symptoms.

Ginger [4]

Ginger has been used in traditional medicine for centuries as its root has been used to aid digestion, fight inflammation and even help fight the common cold. A 2014 study looked at 45 patients with IBS and found that taking 1 gram of ginger per day for 28 days led to a 26% reduction of IBS symptoms.

Turmeric [5]

Turmeric has been used in ancient Indian and Chinese medicine due to its active ingredient curcumin. that provides a range of health benefits. Several animal studies have shown turmeric’s pain relieving properties for IBS symptoms. In a 2004 human study, participants took turmeric extract, in the form of tablets, every day for 8 weeks. People reported less IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain and discomfort. They also saw a boost in their quality of life.

Vitamin D [6]

A 2015 study examined vitamin D levels of patients with IBS compared to a healthy control group. 82% of IBS patients were found to have a vitamin D deficiency as opposed to 31% of the control group.

Psyllium Husk [7]

Psyllium is made of 70% soluble fiber which enables it to pass through the human digestive system relatively unchanged, acting as a gentle, bulk-forming laxative. A recent publication in 2017 reviewed the results of many IBS studies to conclude that psyllium husk is a safe way to manage IBS and can improve many of the overall IBS symptoms.

Piperine [8]

As the main alkaloid in black pepper, piperine has been thoroughly researched to reveal its potent antioxidant properties and has been shown to significantly increase the absorption of nutrients in the body.

Research On IBS Products

Our research identified key areas that we felt raised concerns when purchasing an IBS supplement. With so many products out there, we felt that we needed clear parameters as to what to look out for when investing in an IBS supplement.

  • It should contain digestive enzymes to help break down food fast and promote a healthy intestinal tract.
  • It should contain key clinically-proven ingredients such as Peppermint, Turmeric, and Ginger to eliminate gas and soothe abdominal pain.
  • It should contain Psyllium Husk to promote bowel regularity and ensure constipation is prevented.
  • It should contain BioPerine® to aid absorption of the key ingredients and speed up the results.
  • It must be 100% pure and natural with no unnecessary ingredients that might reduce the overall effectiveness of the product.

We researched numerous IBS products to ascertain an in-depth analysis of what is out there on the market.  Most products failed to pass our specific criteria.

How To Find High-Quality IBS Manufacturers

OK, so….how can you find trustworthy manufacturers? We created this discerning list as a basic guide_new:

  • Optimal Dosage and Purity: We eliminated any products with synthetic fillers, unnecessary ingredients and inconsistent pills.
  • Verified Customer Reviews: We reviewed testimonials of real consumers who had purchased, used the products and given feedback.
  • Monitoring by a Third Party: Using third-party organizations to independently monitor and track the reputation of a manufacturer and assess their customer satisfaction levels is crucial.
  • 100% Money Back Guarantee: A strong guarantee demonstrates the confidence that manufacturers have in their products.
  • External Testing: Third-party testing substantiates and verifies the quality of the manufacturer’s product. It can be very expensive for manufacturers to undertake and even disqualify entire shipments of products that don’t reach the correct standards.

We are very confident in the brands that we did pick. Given our stringent parameters and reasons for choosing our recommendations, we are sure our suggestions will help you achieve the results you are looking for.

Physician’s Herbal Formula Idiopathic Bowel Pain Review

While we were pleased to see this product is backed by a trained physician, we were dismayed when we could not find a list of ingredients that can be found in this supplement. The most we could discern was that this product is comprised of herbs in a clear capsule.

It is difficult to determine the potential side effects of this product, seeing as the ingredients are a secret. Each bottle is about $30 and while there is a 30-day return policy, it is only if the container is unopened. Which means it is not possible to try this product and return it if you are not satisfied with the results.

Our own tests showed that it was a good product, but we all know that supplements don’t always work the same way for everyone. Even though Physician’s Herbal Formula Idiopathic Bowel Pain seems to have a very good formula, we would feel much more confident in this product if we knew exactly what was inside of each capsule. That said, if you don’t mind taking a chance, this product might work for you.

Zenwise Health Daily Digestive Enzymes Review

This product comprises all-natural, plant-based enzymes which helps the body’s digestive process, as well as reduces the symptoms of IBS and general abdominal discomfort.* It contains many of the same ingredients found in our first choice, which is great news. In addition, the ingredients used in their formula are high quality and all natural.

However, there are some ingredients which we felt should have been included in their ingredient list, such as zinc as it is a well-known aid to IBS symptoms. In addition, although the enzymes are gluten-free, they are not considered to be safe for people suffering from celiac disease. Because of this, this product could contain trace elements which could trigger IBS, depending on an individual’s sensitivity to it. We would have also liked increased transparency on how exactly one can actually claim their money-back policy. While these are all small issues, together they can lead to a product which may not be as effective as some other products.

Since the company itself has a good track record and most consumers we spoke to were pretty satisfied with it, we still consider this to be a solid product. Just remember that it has a few slight disadvantages.
