What is Schiff Vitamins Digestive Advantage?

Digestive Advantage capsules have been designed by Schiff Vitamins to manage, eliminate and reduce Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and the symptoms thereof as well as general abdominal pain and discomfort. There are many digestive and IBS management aids on the market. This review examines the specific formulation of Digestive Advantage and how likely it is to bring relief.

Schiff specifically states that the capsules, which are meant to be taken as a dietary supplement, help reduce gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Long-term benefits to immunity and digestive health, in general, are also claimed.

Formula

  • Bc Bacillus Coagulans
  • Protease
  • Amylase
  • Lipase
  • Maltodextrin
  • Hypromellose
  • Microcrystalline Cellulose
  • Steric Acid
  • Waster
  • Dextrin
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Silicon Dioxide
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Caramel Color
  • Wheat
  • Soy

The essential thing to note is that each capsule contains a patented probiotic, BC30. Probiotics are safe almost without exception and their main advantages are:

  • Lining the gastrointestinal tract surface and preventing the intrusion of harmful organisms.
  • Strengthening bowel wall tissue.
  • Acting as a counter to other bacteria.
  • Regulating immune system responses in the bowel and body generally.

BC30 is formulated to withstand digestive acids, and is purportedly 100 times better than yogurts and other probiotics. This probiotic breaks down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats so that digestion becomes easier. It is likely that this powerful probiotic can act as a calming agent for the digestive ails leading to IBS and may well prove highly effective in combating gut discomfort. No artificial flavoring has been added. We find the inclusion of wheat and soy unusual for a dietary supplement. Wheat contains gluten, or trace elements thereof, which is itself often an IBS trigger.

Directions

Take one or two capsules with main meals daily. Children should consume the opened contents of one capsule with food or liquid. It takes seven to 14 days for an effect to be felt.

Price

The product retails for $17.11 on the manufacturer’s website for 96 capsules or a 1.5 month supply. There are savings of 2, 4 and 7 percent for buying in bulk and purchasing 3, 6 and 12 packs respectively. Various pricing packages are available from various resellers.

Possible Side Effects

We find the inclusion of wheat and soy unusual for a dietary supplement. Most often, wheat contains gluten, or trace elements thereof, which is itself often an IBS trigger. Maltodextrin can also lead to bloating and flatulence.  Although not expressly stated, we would always advise pregnant and breastfeeding women to obtain clearance from their attending physicians first.

Manufacturer’s Commitment

Goods must be returned within 30 days to qualify for a refund and no unopened or used products may be sent back. The guarantee only applies to defective products. There are also other restrictions.

Schiff Vitamins Digestive Advantage Review – The Bottom Line

Schiff Vitamins has created a product that by resting on a powerful probiotic as much as it does, is likely to clear up many IBS symptoms by restoring gut health proactively and over the long term. It is a quality formulation that should not be used a quick fix but as part of a daily regimen. Many consumers have rated the product highly, although there are a few exceptions.

The inclusion of wheat, soy and maltodextrin is somewhat surprising as these can all trigger IBS-like symptoms. We would, however, have liked to see more ingredients related to acting as soothing anti-inflammatory agents and more digestive enzymes. This would have allowed for a two-prong approach to relieving symptoms and keeping the gut healthy. We would also have liked to see a more transparent, robust returns policy.
